The focus of CIC

CIC holds an exploration license in the Cook Islands EEZ. The company brings together extensive expertise in abyssal geology, oceanography, advanced underwater technology and deep-sea ecosystem analysis to support seabed mineral exploration with a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship. 
 
CIC is not just focused on the economic potential of polymetallic nodules in the deep sea, but also about understanding the broader environmental and cultural impacts of any exploration or harvesting activities on the seabed or in the water column.

Advanced Marine Technology

CIC utilises cutting-edge technology, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), multibeam sonar mapping systems as well as many different sampling and analytical systems to explore the abyssal zone bottom, water column and surface waters.  These technologies help characterise and understand the mineral deposits and life forms associated with them while simultaneously mapping and recording sensitive habitats and ecosystems.

Environmental Impact

Assessment

CIC is conducting comprehensive environmental baseline and impact studies to understand the potential effects nodule harvesting would have on deep-sea and midwater ecosystems.  This research includes studying flora and fauna species diversity, sediment displacement and the potential impacts of harvesting technology on marine life and its surroundings.

Community and Policy

Engagement

CIC works closely with local communities, government, and multiple other stakeholders to develop policies that support sustainable seabed exploration and resource development.  The company is focused on providing scientific data to allow all stakeholders to evaluate a balancing of the economic potential of deep ocean seabed mineral resources with the need for environmental protection and cultural sensitivity.
